Together in Sisterhood

There is this untold myth that African American women compete against one another. Many assume that most of us are against each other and want to lessen the next woman. This is sad and untrue. Many of us operate in peace and don’t invite chaos into our lives. The 2020 Instagram Live battle between Jill Scott and Erykah Badu completely shattered those unspoken stereotypes.

For the first time in years we saw two successful women in song and poetry who shared their strength for the world to see. They gracefully shared their lyrical gold and applauded one another in the same breath. It was magical! It was a total vibe. No fighting. No drinks being thrown. No side piece, baby mama drama. It was truly epic.

I learned from these two women that there is room at the top. You can successfully work with someone and also admire their talent at the same time. These two Goddesses shared the same platform. They support each other instead of demeaning each other. It was truly a vision of Squad Goals.

If your circle doesn’t clap for the next woman then you don’t have a circle. This verzus battle was Herstory in the making that laid the foundation for more positive vibes in our culture. We can be friends. We can applaud someone else. We can share the same ability. There is a seat at the table. If you haven’t done so already, call up your sister friend. Send an encouraging message by text. Tag your home girl in a social media post that can assist her in her personal goals. This is a movement. We can all rise together.
