Our trials and tribulations often steer our current outlook on life. For some their childhood or family experiences curate their adult life. But for some, a prison experience can offer hindsight on their outlook and/or awareness level in life. Damon Amin Meadows is a true experience of using his prison experience to create awareness and a cultural shift.

Damon was a product of the criminal justice and prison system in America. While incarcerated as a first time offender, he experienced many new findings. Once he was released he chose to share his experience in hopes of shedding light on the LGBTQIA and HIV/AIDS communities. He chose to use literature as the method in which he shared these experiences. His successful book release has gained much traction, caused many discussions and raised necessary awareness. Here’s what he shared about his inspiration, writing and life outcomes:

What inspired your current book release?

“The inspiration to write “CONVICT’S CANDY” came after being tried and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. I am a first-time offender who was sent straight to the federal penitentiary. Unfortunately, I witnessed some of the most horrifying acts known to man. From suicide by hanging, rape to lust and murder. Also due to the racist drug laws and the mass incarceration of black men, most likely my two beautiful daughters will deal with a man who has been in jail and/or prison at least once in his life. So they, as well as, every other woman have a right to know what truly goes on behind those walls. Women think men are just being raped in prison but most are falling in love!”

How was your transition back into society after your release?

I was released in 2014. My transition has been pretty smooth thus far. Technology was my only real challenge but I love to learn. Being one of the few people who are open-minded and lived in a time before and now during the internet has its advantages.”

How is your book impacting the community and those currently incarcerated?

“CONVICT’S CANDY has opened the room up for adult conversations. Everything from HIV/AIDS, sexual identity, coming out to black family members to racism and just Us sentencing laws! So much so that we’re about to launch “CONVICT’S CANDY After Dark”, which is a much-needed podcast. Autographed copies of “CONVICT’S CANDY” can be purchased here: www.embracepublishing.com.”

What solutions do you have in order to increase awareness for the HIV/AIDS community?

“Education about practicing safe sex and keeping the so-called taboo subjects on the table through educational/entertaining platforms is needed. We’re in talks about the T.V. adaptation of “CONVICT’S CANDY”. Homosexuality, Prison and HIV/AIDS are major closet conversations. The stories in “CONVICT’S CANDY” are so intense and impactful that it’s perfect for T.V. while also creating more awareness of the subject matter.”

Damon is definitely a curating awareness and worthwhile storytelling that will uplift, inspire and educate. “My life will be an inspirational story after I’m long gone,” says Damon. “I hope to continue to be a positive example of what a returning citizen is capable of accomplishing when it’s an opportunity in front of them,” he continues. Surely, his lasting impact will affect the world. Connect with his brand on Instagram and Facebook as @Damon Amin Meadows.
