African Americans make up about 13% of the general U.S. population according to Mental Health America. Within that population, 16% have reported to have a mental illness. These growing statistics are no stranger to many African American women. As the family caregiver, nurturing role model and superwoman to many; Black women often neglect their own well-being for others.

Trish Ahjel Roberts is one author who is set to demystify the stereotypes of Black women everywhere. Set to the life portrayal of a butterfly, her new literary work, “Thinking Outside the Chrysalis: A Black Woman’s Guide to Spreading Her Wings,” is transforming lives with her knowledge of healing. Similar to a caterpillar blossoming into a butterfly, our self-discovery and healing after trauma is the human form of our transformation. Trish is assisting women with knowing how to recover from certain traumatic events.

The weight of the world is no longer on the shoulders of all Black women. Through her own personal challenges, Trish Ahjel Roberts, has compiled a best-seller collection of musical playlists, social media supportive services and resources into one powerful project. “I wanted to counter some of the negative messaging by putting together resources to support positive growth,” explains Roberts.

This therapeutic masterpiece gives four key factors on how every Black woman can also spread their wings like the elegant butterflies that soar within the skies:

  1. Open your lives to possibilities that you haven’t considered before;
  2. Take time to heal from your past while also releasing anger;
  3. Fall in love with yourself by getting to know the real you; and
  4. Let go of some things; whether it be people or tangible items/goods.
